Selling art on Shopify plus art fairs can work. Here is what tends to be missing, why a managed line fills the gap, and how the move can look.

Shopify for artists is a common starting point. It is a solid commerce platform, it runs stores of every kind, and plenty of painters, printmakers and sculptors sell art on Shopify alongside a busy art fair calendar.¹ For many of them it works. Over time, though, a lot of those artists notice that the store is only one piece of the job, and every other piece still lands on them.

That is why more artists are moving the business side of their line to a Brakebee managed line. This article explains why the move makes sense and then walks through an example of how the process can look.

What Shopify does well for artists

Shopify deserves credit. It gives you a clean storefront, reliable checkout, your own domain and a large app store for adding features.¹ If you enjoy building and tuning a store, it gives you a lot of control.

The catch is that Shopify is a tool you run yourself. It does what you set it up to do, and the work around it stays on your desk: product photos and listings, social posts, email, other marketplaces, wholesale and keeping all of it current between shows.

What tends to go missing with Shopify plus art fairs

Artists who pair a Shopify art store with festivals usually describe the same gaps. Show season eats the weeks when online marketing should happen. New work makes it to the booth long before it reaches the website. Etsy, Square and wholesale each need their own upkeep. And the online store goes quiet whenever the artist is on the road.

Why the move to Managed Lines is smart

A managed line is an ongoing partnership. Brakebee takes over the online side of your art line and keeps it running week after week, while you keep making work and doing your shows.² It works like having an art agent for your whole line.

Your custom domain comes first

Your website lives on your own domain, so the address on your cards, tags and booth signs keeps pointing to your work. Brakebee builds the site from your catalog and keeps it current.²,³

You don't have to leave Shopify behind

Shopify is one of the channels a managed line can run. Through Brakebee's connector, your catalog products can list in a Shopify store, with orders and tracking syncing back.³ Square works from the same catalog, which helps at the booth.³ Some artists keep their Shopify store running as one channel among several. Others let it wind down once their own-domain site is live. We work that out together.

More places to sell from one catalog

Your line can appear on the curated Brakebee marketplace plus Etsy, Shopify, Wayfair, Walmart, eBay, TikTok Shop and Square.²,³ We pick the channels that fit your work and your fulfillment plan. Where your art gets listed covers each one.

A full wholesale division

Brakebee runs your line's entire wholesale division. That covers wholesale markets including Brakebee's Wholesale Market, Faire and other wholesale marketplaces, line reps who carry your work to retailers, and sales to galleries and interior designers.²,⁴ Wholesale is often the part a solo Shopify seller never gets to.

Marketing that keeps running

Brakebee schedules social posts and email for your line through its own tools, every week, including the weeks you are packing the van.³ Paid ads are another layer and another conversation. The managed line runs on organic marketing, and if you want ads on top, we can help.

Products from the Phoenix lab

Where it suits your art, Brakebee sets up print-on-demand products and print runs, including aluminum metal prints and canvas, made in Brakebee's Phoenix lab.³

Here's how the process can look

An example story. Dana Wilder is fictional. This illustrates how the process can look and describes no real person or real results.

Meet Dana Wilder, a fictional landscape painter who sells originals and prints. For a few years Dana ran a Shopify store and did a full spring and fall festival schedule. The setup worked. Sales came in at shows, and the store picked up orders when Dana had time to post.

What was missing was time. Between painting, framing, driving to shows and running the booth, the store rarely got new work. Etsy sat half finished. Wholesale was an idea for someday. Every festival carried the weight of the season, so each weekend felt like a test Dana had to pass.

Dana started a partnership conversation with Brakebee through the contact form, answering a few questions about the work, the fairs and where things sold.

Together we planned the line: which originals and prints belonged in it, which channels fit, how fulfillment would work around the show calendar and which pieces made sense as metal and canvas prints. Dana sent files, photos and the stories behind the paintings.

Brakebee built Dana's catalog and a new website on Dana's own domain, kept the Shopify store running as a channel, added Etsy and Square, and set up print-on-demand products. Wholesale came next, with a listing on Faire and the Brakebee Wholesale Market and outreach to galleries and interior designers. Social posts and emails started going out on a schedule.

Now the online side runs in the background. Dana still does the festivals and still sells there. The difference is how the weekends feel. With steadier income coming in between shows, the booth is about meeting people, telling the story behind a painting and enjoying the day. The pressure to sell, sell, sell has eased, and the hours Dana used to spend on listings go back into the studio, designing and painting new work.

That is the flip we aim for: the business keeps moving while the artist gets back to the art.

What you keep

Your fairs, festivals and custom or commission pieces stay entirely yours.² You keep making the work and telling its story. During the partnership, Brakebee is your online seller for the products in your line, and you see the terms for your line during planning, before anything is signed. Managed Lines ownership explained goes into more detail.

A note on results

We do the work that gives your line a real chance online: consistent listings, posts, emails, wholesale outreach and products. We don't guarantee sales.² Results depend on the work, the market and the fit.

Is it time to move?

If your Shopify store gets less attention than it deserves, if wholesale keeps sliding to next year, or if show season leaves you with no time to create, a managed line is worth a conversation.
