Every artist who sells prints hits the same fork in the road sooner or later. You can order a batch of prints from a fine art print lab, keep them on hand and ship them yourself, or you can let a print-on-demand service make each print only after someone buys it. Both routes can produce beautiful work, and both can build a real business. The difference comes down to when you spend money, who handles the packing tape, and how much unsold paper you are willing to store under your bed.

This guide walks through print on demand vs bulk printing in practical terms: how each one works day to day, where the risk sits, and which kinds of artists tend to do best with each. If you want the short version of how Brakebee's print-on-demand works for artists, start with our <a href="/print-on-demand">print-on-demand for artists</a>.

With a traditional print lab, you are the store and the warehouse. You choose which images to print, pick the sizes and papers, and place an order for a set quantity. The lab prints the batch and ships the whole box to you. From there, every sale is yours to fulfill: you pull a print from the stack, sign it if you like, package it, buy postage and send it out.

The big appeal of a lab batch is control, since you see and touch every print before a customer does, and you always have stock ready when a buyer at a show wants to walk away with something today.

With print-on-demand, nothing gets printed until a customer pays. You upload your artwork once, set up your products and sizes, and list them in your shop or on the marketplaces you sell through. When an order comes in, the lab prints that single piece, packs it and ships it straight to your buyer. You never hold inventory, and your time goes into making art and finding buyers.

You order a batch up front, store it, and pack and ship every sale yourself. Best for events, wholesale and hands-on quality checks.

Bulk lab order

Each print is made after a customer orders it and ships directly to them. Best for selling online, testing new work and offering many sizes and finishes.

Print-on-demand

Print-on-demand vs inventory, side by side

The print-on-demand vs inventory question gets clearer when you line the two models up across the things that actually affect your week.

Thinking through the math without a calculator

The tradeoff speaks to your art business model. A bulk order turns your money into paper the moment you place it, and that money only comes back as each print sells. The question to ask yourself is simple: how many of these prints am I confident I will sell, and how soon?

If you have an image that sells steadily every month, a batch can make sense because you know it will move. If you are guessing, the batch becomes a bet, and every print left over at the end is money sitting in a drawer.

Storage matters too. Prints need flat, dry space, and they can get bent, scuffed or water-damaged while they wait. Every extra size you stock multiplies the problem, which is why bulk sellers usually offer only a few sizes.

Print-on-demand flips the timing. Since the print is made after the sale, you are never paying for prints nobody wanted, and you can offer every size without stocking any of them. You give up the hands-on inspection of each piece in exchange for zero inventory risk.

When a bulk print lab order is the better choice

A batch from a fine art print lab tends to win when you sell in person. Art fairs, markets, open studios and gallery pop-ups all reward having prints you can hand over on the spot, and buyers at events love leaving with their purchase.

Bulk also fits wholesale, where a shop or gallery orders a set quantity of the same piece. It suits artists who want to sign, number and hand-finish each print themselves, and it works well for someone who wants to approve every print personally before it reaches a collector.

If your best seller moves reliably and you have room to store it, a batch of that one image can sit alongside an online shop without much risk.

When print-on-demand is the better choice

Print-on-demand is usually the stronger fit for artists who sell mostly online. You can list a whole catalog without buying any of it, so a new painting can go up for sale the same day you photograph it.

It is also the safer way to test. Put a new image up in several sizes and finishes and let buyers tell you what they like before you commit to anything. And because fulfillment is handled for you, you can sell across many channels at once without your living room turning into a mailroom.

Questions to ask any lab or print-on-demand service

Whichever route you choose, the quality of the prints carries your name. Before you commit, ask these questions of any fine art print lab or print-on-demand service.

Plenty of artists end up with a mix. Print-on-demand covers the online shop, with every size and finish available and no stock to manage, while a small batch of proven sellers travels to fairs and markets. The online side doubles as a testing ground: when an image keeps selling on demand, that is a strong signal it has earned a spot in your event inventory.

Whichever way you lean, order a sample of your own work first. Holding a finished print is the fastest way to know whether a lab's color and paper do your art justice.

How Brakebee handles print-on-demand for artists

Brakebee's print-on-demand is built for artists selling their own work. You can offer dozens of print sizes, and the finishes cover the surfaces collectors ask for: gloss, satin and matte aluminum, gloss or matte photo prints, gallery wrap canvas and giclée. Archival inks are used for artist prints. Beyond wall art, you can turn your designs into custom products such as keychains, notecards, printed decor, coasters, calendars and coloring books.

Orders usually turn around in hours to a day, and you are paid after products ship. You can sell through your Brakebee shop and connect marketplaces including Etsy, Shopify, TikTok Shop, Wayfair, Walmart, Amazon, eBay and Faire, with more coming soon. If you want to offer limited edition runs, we walk you through how they work when you sign up.

Comparing platforms before you decide? Our guide to the <a href="/articles/best-print-on-demand-for-artists">best print-on-demand for artists</a> lines up seven options side by side, and the <a href="/print-on-demand">Brakebee print-on-demand</a> page shows how it all fits together.

Pick the model that matches how you sell today, and keep the door open to mixing both as you grow. If online sales are your focus, print-on-demand lets you open a full catalog without buying a single print up front.

Print Lab vs Print-on-Demand: Which is Right for Your Art Business?

Order art prints in bulk from a lab or print each sale on demand? Compare upfront cost, inventory risk, quality control and shipping before you choose.

Print Lab vs Print-on-Demand: Bulk or On-Demand for Artists

Print Lab vs Print-on-Demand: Should Artists Order in Bulk or Print Per Sale?

If you paint, draw, or shoot, and you want to sell prints without buying a stack of inventory, print-on-demand is the obvious answer: a buyer pays, a lab prints that one order and ships it, and you keep the difference between your price and the costs.

Choosing one is the hard part, because "print-on-demand" covers three very different kinds of businesses, and the best one for a T-shirt shop is rarely the best one for a painter selling canvas wraps and metal prints. This guide compares seven options artists ask about most: Printful, Printify, Gelato, Redbubble, Society6, Fine Art America, and Brakebee. It covers what you control, how you get paid, and what each one is best for.

For a short overview of how Brakebee's print-on-demand works, see <a href="https://brakebee.com/print-on-demand">print-on-demand for artists</a>.

Three kinds of print-on-demand and why the difference matters

1. Fulfillment services: you find your own buyers. Printful, Printify, and Gelato make the product and ship it, but you sell it on your own store or marketplace account. You set the retail price and keep the difference. You also have to bring in all the traffic yourself. These companies operate more like a traditional drop-shipper.

2. Marketplaces: they bring the buyers and you're in a sea of products. Redbubble and Society6 host your designs on their sites, set or cap the price, and pay you a share. The shoppers belong to the marketplace, so you can never remarket to them or build a personal following. Fine Art America is a marketplace too, but you set your own markup.

3. Artist platforms with their own lab. Brakebee pairs its own in-house print lab with a curated art marketplace, a personalized artist website at yourname.brakebee.com, and add-on sales channels, all from one catalog. They offer Social Central as a marketing platform and have a range of integrated tools to help artists build a following and talk to them. On Brakebee you build your own marketing program based around your own art.

Artist Platforms with Lab

Brakebee is built for artists who sell their own work or want a complete managed package. You upload your work once, set your price, and it sells on the curated Brakebee marketplace and on your own artist website at yourname.brakebee.com. Acceptance to the juried marketplace gives you the Verified Artist badge to prove you're not AI slop, and your shop can be upgraded to your own domain or a custom site. Add-on channels include Etsy, Shopify, TikTok Shop, Wayfair, Walmart, Amazon, eBay, and Faire, with more coming soon. Brakebee's <a href="https://brakebee.com/managed-lines">managed lines program</a> places your artwork into our omnichannel marketing system to print, market, sell and ship your products so you can focus on creating and in-person events.

When a collector pays, Brakebee's Phoenix lab prints, packs, and ships the order, usually within hours to a day, and prints are hand-checked before they ship. You get paid after the product ships on your chosen payout schedule.

What you can sell: gloss, satin, and matte aluminum; gloss or matte photo; gallery-wrap canvas and giclée, in dozens of sizes. You can also go beyond wall art with keychains, notecards, printed decor, coasters, calendars, coloring books, and more. All artist prints use archival inks and substrates.

Fees: the account is free, there's no monthly marketplace fee, and a marketplace sale is 15% with card processing included. Channels like Etsy and Shopify are add-on connectors.

Best for: painters, photographers, and illustrators who want gallery-grade prints and their own shop plus a curated marketplace, connections to major retailers and access to in-person events and art festivals. One more advantage: the same master file works for print-on-demand and for a print run for your next show or art festival. → <a href="https://brakebee.com/print-on-demand">See how Brakebee print-on-demand works</a>

Printful runs its own production and fulfillment. The Free plan is $0/month and includes access to 579 custom products, stores plus 10 Quick Stores, and selling on several ecommerce platforms and marketplaces. Growth costs $24.99/month, becomes free once you reach $12K/year in sales, and gives a discount on product pricing. Printful's own formula is simple: your profit equals the retail price minus Printful's cost, which covers the product, fulfillment, and shipping. The catalog leans toward apparel and merch. Best for: retailers who already run a store and want merch alongside prints.

Printify is a network: you choose from 70+ print providers per product, which means base cost and quality depend on the provider you pick. The Free plan covers 5 stores; Premium starts at $39/month, or from $24.99/month billed yearly, and adds a discount off all products. Printify says it earns a margin on the fulfillment price, with no platform or listing fees. Several integrations are available. Best for: sellers chasing the lowest base cost across a 2,000+ product catalog. Be sure to order samples from the exact provider you plan to use, since quality varies by provider.

Gelato routes each order to a production partner near the customer. Its pricing page says there are no upfront costs and Gelato doesn't charge commission: you pay for the product and shipping when an order comes in. A paid tier called Gelato+ offers up to 33% off products. Best for: artists selling to buyers in many countries. Like Printful and Printify, you supply the storefront and the traffic.

On Redbubble you do set your price: you choose a markup on Redbubble's base price, which defaults to 10% and can be raised or lowered any time. Your earnings are that markup, and the fees you pay depend on your account tier. Standard accounts pay a 50% platform fee on monthly earnings, Premium pays 20%, and Pro pays none. Standard and Premium accounts also pay a 50% excess markup fee on earnings from markup above 20%. Total account fees are capped at $150 per payment period, and they're only taken when you make a sale. Best for: designs that suit stickers, apparel, and gifts, sold to Redbubble's existing shoppers. On a Standard account, fees can take half your earnings, and raising your markup above 20% mostly increases fees. Redbubble owns the customer relationship.

Society6 sets the price for you. Since March 18, 2025, artists can no longer set their own markup; the markup is 5–10% depending on the product. Earnings are paid between the first and third business day of each month, after a pending period of 30–60 days. Best for: artists who want a hands-off listing with little control.

Fine Art America sets a base price for each product, and you add a dollar markup on top. Whatever markup you set is exactly what you earn on the sale. The standard account is free, and Premium is $30/year. Premium adds a white-label website, and a Shopify app lets your Shopify store sell their products with their fulfillment. Products include prints, canvas, framed, metal, and acrylic prints, cards, home decor, and apparel. Best for: sellers who want set marketplace reach and larger markups. Your shop lives inside a very large marketplace, next to many other artists.

How print-on-demand margins actually work

Every option above comes down to the same formula:

> Your profit per sale = your retail price − product cost − any shipping you pay − platform or marketplace fee − payment processing

A simple approach is to decide what you want to earn per print first, then work backwards to the retail price, and compare that price with what similar work sells for. For a step-by-step method, see <a href="https://brakebee.com/articles/sell-prints-online">How to Sell Prints Online</a>.

Whichever platform you pick, order one print of your own work first. Check color against your original, sharpness at the largest size you'll offer, the edges and wrap on canvas, and how it's packed. On Brakebee you can <a href="https://brakebee.com/pod-storefront">try a print of your work first</a> before you list. For more on how the lab works with artists' files, see <a href="https://printsbybrakebee.com/for-artists">Prints for artists</a> from Prints by Brakebee.

Print-on-demand works well for testing designs and selling one at a time. It's a weaker fit for limited editions you sign and number by hand, or when you need 50 prints on a table at a show next weekend, and in those cases a print run makes more sense. Because Brakebee was designed for artists, we track your limited edition runs including mid-run print on demand orders. For metal specifically, see <a href="https://brakebee.com/articles/metal-prints-for-artists">Metal Prints for Artists</a>.

What is the best print-on-demand site for artists? It depends on what you sell and whether you have buyers. For wall art with your own shop plus a curated marketplace, Brakebee. For merch on an existing retail front, Printful or Printify. For anonymous marketplace traffic with markup, Fine Art America.

Which print-on-demand sites let me set my own price? Printful, Printify, Gelato, Fine Art America, and Brakebee. Redbubble lets you set your markup, which defaults to 10%, but Standard and Premium accounts pay a 50% fee on earnings from markup above 20%. Society6 sets the markup itself at 5–10%.

How much does Redbubble take? It depends on your tier: Standard pays a 50% platform fee on monthly earnings, Premium 20%, Pro none, plus an excess markup fee above 20% markup for Standard and Premium. Fees are capped at $150 per payment period (est. as of 10/13/2026, verify on their site).

Is print-on-demand worth it for fine artists? Yes, if the lab's quality matches your work and you price above total cost. Order a sample first, and use a lab that offers fine-art finishes like giclée, canvas, and aluminum.

Can I use print-on-demand with Etsy or Shopify? Yes. Printful and Printify connect to both, Fine Art America has a Shopify app, and Brakebee offers Etsy and Shopify as add-on channels.

When do artists get paid? It varies: Society6 pays monthly after a 30–60 day pending period; Redbubble pays monthly after fees; Brakebee pays after the product ships, on your chosen payout schedule. With Printful, Printify, and Gelato, your buyer pays you at checkout and you pay the labs for the product.

How fast does Brakebee ship print-on-demand orders? Usually within hours to a day after a collector pays.

Metal Prints for Artists: Complete Guide to Selling & Pricing (2026)

Everything artists need to know about metal prints: understanding lab costs, pricing strategies, quality factors, and choosing the best labs. Build a profitable metal print business.

Metal prints (aluminum prints) have become one of the most popular products for artists selling prints online. They're durable, vibrant, modern-looking, and command premium prices. Here's everything you need to know.

Metal prints (also called aluminum prints) are created by infusing dyes directly into specially coated aluminum sheets. The result is a vibrant, durable, and modern-looking print that doesn't require framing or glass.

Understanding Metal Print Lab Costs & Artist Pricing

Metal print lab costs vary significantly across providers and sizes. When evaluating labs for your business, you'll want to compare wholesale artist pricing across common sizes like 8×10, 11×14, 16×20, 20×24, and 30×40. Lab costs are the foundation of your pricing strategy—lower wholesale costs mean more room for healthy profit margins while staying competitive.

Artist lab costs typically scale with size, but volume discounts and lab-specific pricing tiers can create significant cost differences between providers. Some labs offer better pricing at smaller sizes, while others become more competitive at larger statement pieces. For a detailed comparison of metal print lab pricing across providers, see our <a href="/articles/artist-print-lab-prices-compared">artist print lab pricing comparison guide</a>.

Setting the right price for your metal prints means balancing competitive market rates with healthy margins that account for your costs and effort. Here's a practical framework artists can use:

Begin with your lab or wholesale cost for the specific size. Add any shipping costs you're absorbing, plus a small buffer for packaging materials and occasional returns or customer service time. This is your baseline—you need to cover this on every sale.

Decide what you need from each sale: covering your hard costs, paying yourself for marketing and customer service, and leaving room for occasional discounts or platform fees if you sell on multiple channels.

A practical range for metal print retail pricing is roughly 2.5× to 3.5× your lab cost. Metal prints justify premium pricing because of their durability (scratch-resistant, waterproof), modern frameless aesthetic, and vibrant color reproduction. Buyers expect to pay more for metal than paper prints, and this markup range keeps you competitive while maintaining healthy profit margins.

Work through the math for each size you offer. Take your lab cost, multiply by your chosen markup (typically 2.5× to 3.5×), and that's your retail price. Your profit per sale is the difference between retail and lab cost. This profit covers your time, marketing, platform fees, and business overhead.

For popular sizes like 16×20, competitive artist pricing typically falls in a range that reflects this markup band while staying competitive with other artists and labs selling direct to consumers. The key is finding the sweet spot where your margins are healthy but your pricing doesn't push buyers away.

Before finalizing your pricing, compare your rates to similar artists' metal print offerings and public lab retail prices. If you're significantly higher or lower than the market, revisit your markup or your positioning. Competitive intelligence helps you price confidently.

Choosing the right lab depends on whether you need just fulfillment or a complete selling infrastructure. Here's how the top options compare:

Brakebee stands out as the strongest option for artists who want both high-quality metal prints and integrated selling tools. You get competitive artist lab pricing across all sizes, plus automatic print-on-demand fulfillment through Prints by Brakebee (<a href="https://printsbybrakebee.com/">printsbybrakebee.com</a> or <a href="https://prints.brakebee.com/">prints.brakebee.com</a>). Beyond fulfillment, Brakebee offers a built-in marketplace where collectors discover your work, plus optional Custom Sites (<a href="https://brakebee.com/custom-sites">/custom-sites</a>) for artists who want a standalone branded storefront. The platform includes connectors to sync inventory and orders across multiple sales channels. If you're looking for metal prints and a complete business stack, Brakebee is built for that.

Successfully selling metal prints online requires clear product presentation and smart positioning. Here's what works:

Lifestyle photos showing your metal prints on actual walls help buyers visualize the finished product in their space. Include room mockups or installation photos whenever possible. These images significantly boost conversion because they answer the buyer's implicit question: "What will this look like in my home?"

Highlight Durability and Premium Features

Metal prints are waterproof, scratch-resistant, and don't require glass or framing—these are major selling points that justify premium pricing. Call out these benefits in your product descriptions and marketing. Buyers choosing metal over paper are often looking for long-term durability and modern aesthetics, so make those features explicit.

Give buyers flexibility by offering a range of sizes, from small starter prints like 8×10 through statement pieces at 30×40 or larger. Different buyers have different wall space and budgets, and size variety increases the likelihood of a sale. Make sure your pricing scales logically with size so buyers can easily compare options.

Use Print-on-Demand Automated Fulfillment

Manual order fulfillment eats time and creates operational overhead. Automated print-on-demand via Prints by Brakebee (<a href="https://printsbybrakebee.com/">printsbybrakebee.com</a>) eliminates the fulfillment burden—orders go straight to production and shipping without you managing inventory or packing boxes. This frees you to focus on creating and marketing while the platform handles logistics.

Metal prints occupy a premium tier in the print market. Position them as modern, high-end products in your marketing—your messaging, photography, and pricing should all reinforce that this is a step above standard paper prints. Buyers shopping for metal are often willing to pay more, but they expect quality and polish to match.
